St George's Park - Chapter 20 - SACU's Inability to Regain Admission to International Cricket
SACU’s inability to regain admission to international competition influenced it to arrange a series of rebel tours. The players were enticed with large amounts of money. Graham Gooch led a team of British mercenaries followed by Sri Lanka and a West Indies squad led by Lawrence Rowe. Kim Hughes also brought a group of Australians along.
SACB vehemently opposed the rebel tours. It claimed that, “They (SACU) have shown total disrespect for the future of the cricketers. They do not care about the ethics of sportsmanship. Their only interest seems to lie in their selfish and aggressively unprincipled attempts to get back into international cricket.”
