St George's Park - Chapter 15 - Dr Piet Koornhof's Attempt to Normalise Cricket
Dr Piet Koornhof replaced Waring as Minister of Sport and in March 1974, Hassan Howa informed the Argus newspaper that he had held a secret meeting with Koornhof in November 1973. According to Howa, Koornhof proposed a three year plan for mixed cricket.
In the first year a multinational (mixed race) team would play against Australia. The Australians would also play against White provincial teams, a white test side and a SACBOC national team.
In the second year a New Zealand touring team would compete against combined black and white provincial teams and a South African team selected on merit.
Mixed trials would be held to select provincial teams and a final trial would be played to select the South African team.
The third year fully integrated cricket from club level to provincial level would be introduced.
