The Basil D’Oliveira saga caused the death-knell of tours to and from South Africa. In 1967 he toured with the MCC to the West Indies. His performance was not impressive which resulted in his omission to represent England against Australia. His recall to play in the fifth Test at the Oval was electrified with a brilliant 158. It was assumed that he would make the touring team to South Africa but failed to impress the selectors. His non-selection was controversial and when he was eventually invited to tour, John Vorster, the South African Prime Minister, reacted vehemently to his inclusion.
