EP cricket’s new sponsorship deal welcomed
Eastern Province cricket bosses have welcomed the multi-million rand sponsorship for the renaming of St George’s Park.
The country’s oldest cricket ground will in future be known as Sahara Oval St George’s.
The R25-million sponsorship by computer equipment giant Sahara – of which R5-million will come to EP and R10-million each for Newlands and Kingsmead – will be paid over a five-year period.
The sponsorship was announced on Wednesday at Newlands in Cape Town.
EP cricket president Raymond Uren said yesterday the money would be used to upgrade the facilities and initiate further training programmes, as well as to implement fresh systems and infrastructure.
“This agreement will most certainly provide an avenue for the further development of players, facilities and the sport in general,” he said.
“Our objective is to raise the profile of EP cricket and we are encouraged by Sahara Computers’ interest in cricket in general, but specifically this province,” Mr Uren said.
Sahara Computers managing director Atul Gupta said the Sahara brand was Proudly South African and fitted in with the spirit of a sport that was close to the hearts of South Africans. “We have selected to partner with Jumbos Cricket based on its rich cricketing culture and we would like to be a part of this tradition and help shape the future.”
