Bloemfontein – Eastern Province were left languishing at the bottom of the log after they slumped to a 10-wicket defeat against Free State in their Supersport Series cricket
match at Goodyear Park yesterday.

Sunday’s ignominious collapse, when they were dismissed for 103 after taking a first innings lead of 94, effectively handed the Free Staters victory and Eagles openers Morne van Wyk (108) and Jonathan Beukes (83) showed their opponents just how to handle the conditions with an excellent partnership of 200, the winning runs coming 10 minutes after lunch in the 56th over.

The result leaves EP virtually out of the running for the Super Six phase of the competition, unless there are some remarkable results over the next two weekends.

Besides their woeful batting effort in the second innings, EP also let themselves down in the field with both Beukes and Van Wyk receiving chances.

Wade Wingfield dropped Beukes when he had eight on Sunday afternoon at first slip and James Bryant missed a hard-hit but straightforward chance at point from Van Wyk when the Free Stater had 53. Both misses came off the bowling of Nantie Hayward.

To snatch victory, EP needed to gobble up any chance which came their way, but they were not up to the task and it leaves them fighting it out in pool A for the wooden spoon with Boland.

Full credit must go to the Free Staters for recovering so well after conceding a fairly substantial first innings deficit.

Man for man, they are probably no better than the Jumbos, but they showed far greater application than their opponents and that proved to be the crucial difference. Only opener Van Wyk stood in a class ahead of the rest in this match.

EP’s next match is against logleaders Natal at St George’s Park, starting on Friday.
