St George's Park - Eastern Province vs Border, 1950
Eastern Province vs Border, 1950December 16, 17, 1949.
In their only match before meeting the M.C.C. the Border team, which included five left-handers and six players under the age of 21, very nearly beat the home side weakened by the absence of Mann and Hird.
The first day was definitely in favour of the bowlers and altogether 20 wickets fell for only 342 runs.
Only Phillips scored over 50 - he was dropped when only at 5.
Du Toit was the best of the EP bowlers and later left-hander Woods enabled Border to gain a lead of 49 on the first innings.
A slovv start by the opening pair in the Border second innings robbed the side of an outright win which, on the run of play, was fully deserved.
Theadaway and Birch put on 126 for the first wicket and later Phillips and Kirton hit hard before the innings was declared closed, leaving EP with 282 runs to make in order to win.
When 6 wickets had fallen for 95, a win for Border seemed certain, but a stand of 81 between Murray and Cawood saved the game for the home side and left the game dravvn.
